How to Get Your Products Shoppable in ChatGPT (and Every Other AI Shopping Channel)
by Dominic Faulring, CEO & Co-Founder
Something quietly changed about online shopping in the last year, and a lot of merchants haven't noticed yet.
A customer opens ChatGPT and types: "What's a good carry-on suitcase under $200?" They get a product carousel — images, prices, reviews — and a Buy button. They tap it, confirm payment, and the order lands in a merchant's Shopify admin. The customer never visited a website. No Google search, no landing page, no cart abandonment flow. The entire purchase happened inside a chat.
That feature — ChatGPT's Instant Checkout, powered by the Agentic Commerce Protocol (ACP) built by OpenAI and Stripe — has been live since late 2025 and opened to all US ChatGPT users (Free tier included) in February 2026. ChatGPT now serves roughly 800–900 million people a week. Google's competing Universal Commerce Protocol (UCP), co-developed with Shopify, followed in January 2026, and Shopify switched on Agentic Storefronts for all US merchants in March 2026.
This isn't a pilot program. It's a new sales channel — and if your products aren't in it, you're invisible in a growing share of buying conversations. Here's how it works and how to get your store in.
What "Shoppable in ChatGPT" Actually Means
There are two distinct things going on, and merchants often conflate them:
- Discovery — AI assistants (ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Gemini, Copilot, Perplexity) can recommend your products in conversation, citing your site or product data.
- Transaction — the customer can complete the purchase inside the chat, with payment processed securely (Stripe's Shared Payment Tokens mean the AI never sees card details) while you remain the merchant of record. The order appears in your Shopify admin like any other, with the AI platform tagged as the traffic source.
The first gets you visibility. The second gets you sales. You want both — and the good news is Shopify has done most of the heavy lifting.
The Shortcut Most Shopify Merchants Already Have
If you're on Shopify, you don't need to build any protocol integrations. When Shopify launched Agentic Storefronts on March 24, 2026, it auto-enrolled eligible stores (paid plans) into the AI commerce feeds. Your catalog can already be syndicated to ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Microsoft Copilot, Gemini, and Perplexity — managed from one place in your admin.
To take control of it:
- Go to Settings → Sales Channels → Agentic Storefronts (or Agentic Commerce settings) in your Shopify admin.
- Review which AI channels are enabled and toggle the ones you want.
- Set product eligibility rules — you control which products appear and can be transacted on.
- Watch the AI channel attribution reporting: orders come through tagged "ChatGPT," "Google AI Mode," and so on, so you can treat this like a real, measurable channel.
There's no extra platform fee from Shopify for this — orders just carry standard payment processing (and for ChatGPT Instant Checkout purchases specifically, OpenAI charges merchants a 4% fee on completed transactions; shoppers pay nothing extra).
Not on Shopify? There's an Agentic plan that lets external platforms syndicate through Shopify Catalog and use Shopify Checkout without migrating your store — though that's a bigger project.
Why "Being Enrolled" Isn't the Same as "Getting Recommended"
Here's the part most merchants miss. Auto-enrollment makes your catalog available to AI agents. It does nothing to make agents choose your products.
And unlike Amazon, this channel isn't pay-to-play — OpenAI has stated that paying the transaction fee doesn't influence which products ChatGPT recommends. Your product data, reviews, and structured content are the levers. An agent deciding between your hiking boots and a competitor's is reading your data, not your ad budget.
If an agent can't confidently answer "what is it, who is it for, and what does it cost to get it here?" from your existing data, it will recommend someone whose data answers that. Practical priorities:
Product data quality
- Titles that describe, not just name. Include size, material, compatibility, and use case — "Merino Wool Crew Sweater, Men's, Charcoal" beats "The Alpine."
- Unambiguous variant names. "Black / Large" works; cryptic internal SKUs or duplicate "Default Title" variants confuse agents.
- GTIN/UPC/MPN identifiers. These are hard requirements in the product feed specs and a primary way agents match products across sources.
- Complete attributes. Dimensions, ingredients, certifications, what's in the box. Fill your metafields — this is where all that structured data work pays off.
- Variant-accurate images and real-time inventory. Agents won't push products with mismatching photos or stale stock signals.
Policies the agent can quote
Shoppers in chat ask things your product page often doesn't answer: "How fast does this ship to California?" "Is this final sale?" "What if it doesn't fit?" The agent will answer either way — using your rules or vague defaults (and vague answers quietly kill conversion). Publish crisp, crawlable shipping, returns, exchange, and warranty policies at stable URLs, and keep Shopify's Knowledge Base app updated so agents stop guessing about your brand.
Third-party trust signals
Reviews, press mentions, and structured schema markup help AI systems validate that your store is legitimate and your products are well-regarded. AI visibility tools can show you whether agents are actually surfacing your products — ChatGPT doesn't give you pre-purchase impression data.
Don't Forget the Rest of the AI Ecosystem
ChatGPT is the biggest single surface, but it's not the only one, and the smart play is coverage, not loyalty:
- Google AI Mode and Gemini — running on UCP. ChatGPT-style conversational discovery vs. Google's high-intent search queries are different buying moments; you want both. Keep your Google Merchant Center account clean (merchants with a healthy GMC feed see meaningfully broader AI visibility).
- Microsoft Copilot and Perplexity — smaller but growing, and both are reachable through the same Shopify syndication.
- Amazon — notably absent from these open protocols. Amazon is building its own walled-garden agents (Rufus, Buy for Me), which makes the open protocols a rare structural advantage for independent brands: in this channel, you're not competing against Amazon's house.
Early movers are seeing real traction — Shopify's president has said AI-referred traffic to Shopify stores grew roughly 7x in the year to early 2026, and analysts project agentic commerce in the hundreds of billions of dollars in the US by 2030. The stores that get their data house in order now will own the recommendations later, the same way early SEO adopters owned page one.
Common Pitfalls We See
- Assuming auto-enrollment = done. Eligibility and visibility are different problems.
- Thin or "clever" product copy. Agents parse facts; brand poetry comes second.
- Policy pages that are PDFs, images, or buried behind scripts. If a crawler can't read it, an agent can't quote it.
- Dirty variant and inventory data. Legacy catalogs with years of accumulated mess are the biggest blocker we fix.
- No measurement. If you're not watching AI channel attribution, you can't tell whether any of this is working — or optimize it.
Want Your Products Selling Inside AI Chats? That's What We Do.
Agentic commerce is half data engineering, half merchandising, and half platform configuration — yes, we know that's three halves, which is exactly why it trips people up. Our team helps Shopify merchants get live and get recommended across ChatGPT, Google AI Mode, Copilot, and Perplexity:
- Catalog and metafield audits — we find and fix the data gaps (GTINs, variants, attributes, imagery) that make agents skip your products.
- Agentic Storefronts setup and governance — channel selection, eligibility rules, and attribution reporting configured properly from day one.
- AI-readable policy and knowledge base build-outs — shipping, returns, and warranty content structured so agents quote you accurately.
- Custom integrations — for headless builds, complex catalogs, or non-standard platforms, we build the feed and checkout integrations directly.
- Ongoing AI visibility tracking — so you can see which assistants are recommending you, and for what.
If you want your products shoppable inside ChatGPT and the rest of the AI shopping ecosystem, our team has the expertise to get you there. Get in touch for a free agentic commerce readiness audit — we'll review your catalog and policies, show you exactly where agents would trip over your data, and map out a fixed-scope plan to get you live.
